| Pepe Tapia Gonzalez lives with his wife, Margarita, and their two
children in the small Amazon village of Misahualli in the Napo province of Ecuador, South
America. Six hours by road from the capital, Misahualli is another world - a gateway
to one of the world's richest ecosystems, the Amazon rainforest. Pepe
visited England in 1996 with the help of the Rainforest Roadshow. Whilst there, he
undertook presentations for schoolchildren and adults in the Midlands and Leicestershire,
as well as giving an interview for a BBC science programme.
Rainforest Tours
Pepe is an English speaking rainforest guide with extensive knowledge of the
local wildlife. With the help of other local guides, Pepe's Travel Agency operates
tours of 1 to 10 days out of Misahualli. Join us to discover some of the wonders of
the rainforest - the amazing wildlife, medicinal plants, beautiful flowers - and learn
about the culture of the tribal people who share this forest paradise. A minimum of
four persons will normally be required to make a tour, but there are often other visitors
in the village if you are travelling alone. Our tours include your transport by
river from Misahualli, overnight accommodation in traditional-style forest camps with
mattresses and mosquito nets, food, bottled drinking water and rubber boots. Most
trips involve some walking, although this can be tailored to suit the needs of the
group. Food is freshly prepared from ingredients sourced in Misahualli and
vegetarian food can be arranged - no game is hunted or wild produce collected from the
forest, with the possible exception of fish.
In conjunction with the Sinchi Sacha Foundation, we are also now able to offer
a higher standard of accommodation at their new lodge on the River Napo during jungle
trips. With stunning views over the surrounding area, the lodge offers private
bedrooms with comfortable beds and mosquito nets, toilet and shower blocks, dining room
and gardens set in the midst of tranquil forest.
Hotel Accommodation in Misahualli
We are pleased to announce that as from January 2000, Ecoselva Travel Agency
has been based in the central square of Misahualli and is able to offer hotel
accommodation, as well as local handicrafts and gifts in our ground floor shop.
Hotel Shaw is being refurbished and upgraded, to enable us to offer en suite facilities
and comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation to visitors to our village.
Misahualli Butterfly Gardens
Now relocated to premises close to the centre of Misahualli, work continues on
this new tourist attraction. A large flight filled with tropical flowers and
butterflies is open to visitors. A place for Ecuadorean and international visitors
to experience a close up view of some of the jewels of the forest, and to observe the life
cycle of this fascinating creatures. We are developing a captive breeding programme
to ensure the sustainability of this project and hope in the future to be able to offer
live pupae for export, as well as assistance in maintaining our local wild populations.
